While there are dozens of ways you can honor America’s fallen this Memorial Day, here are a few things NOT to do:
- DON’T WISH ANYONE A “HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY”
This is not Valentine’s Day. It’s a remembrance of the extreme sacrifice troops have made protecting this country so that the rest of us may enjoy it’s bountiful freedom (at a high cost). This holiday deserves honor and remembrance of America’s fallen. - DON’T THANK LIVING TROOPS
Memorial Day is for remembering soldiers who are no longer with us because they died in or because of war. Thanking a living serviceman or woman for Memorial Day can be construed as a bad omen and is inappropriate.
However, don’t forget – they deserve a thank you EVERYDAY. If you see a military person in uniform that is a fantastic opportunity to buy them a meal or “pay it forward” to them.
- DON’T DISREGARD ITS IMPORTANCE
Being that Memorial Day creates a long weekend it’s a great American opportunity to have fun and buy stuff discounted. Before you have all your friends over to enjoy your new BBQ, make sure you take a moment to be thankful for what this holiday is actually for. Visiting a veterans cemetery is a great idea to make it real. If you don’t have anyone buried in the veterans cemetery, bring a gift for a stranger who has lost someone and give it to them while your there. You don’t know how much that could mean to them. Afterwards you can fully enjoy your friends at your BBQ! - DON’T FORGET IT EXISTS
Even worse than allowing the day to become synonymous with deep discounts and potato salad, is letting it slip from the public’s mind completely. When it becomes simply a highly-anticipated extra morning of sleeping in, instead of the day of reflection and appreciation it was meant to be, we disrespect our fallen troops. - DON’T LET POLITICS KEEP YOU FROM RENDERING RESPECT
Even if you don’t agree with the idea of war, or the reasons America goes to war, or the policies of a particular president who was the Commander in Chief during a specific war, it doesn’t matter. People have defended the people and interests of America for over 200 years, and your right to disagree with the reasons for war should be separate from your opinion of the troops themselves.
