The American Colonial gets most of it’s style from Britian. The original Colonials were built in the original 13 colonies in Northeast United States. A Colonial can be constructed of wood, brick or stone. Here are the main characteristics of a Colonial home;

As American was being established, various settlers gave their own flare to the plain Colonial based upon their own country of origin. Additional variations derived from building location or historic timing. There are ten variations of the Colonial; English, German, Georgian, Federalist, French, Revival and Neo-Colonial.
